Georges Brassens - Supplique pour être enterré à la plage de Sète

Georges Brassens died a week after turning 60 on 29 October 1981.  He's buried in Sète (where he was born) but in the cemetery, not on the beach at Sète as this humorous song requests.  An English translation can be found at Supplique pour être enterré à la plage de Sète.

Georges Brassens Le Gorille (with English Subtitles)

Georges Brassens (b 22 October 1921; d 29 October 1981)
Le Gorille is one of Brassens' early songs which caused a stir when first released in post-WWII France.

Today is also Dory Previn's birthday and Ewan MacColl (father of Kirsty; composer of Dirty Old Town and The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face - amongst many others) died on this date in 1989.

Clivia flowers

Clivia flowers October 2010
Some people pronounce "Clivia" as if it had a short "i" but it was named in honour of  Lady Charlotte Clive, Duchess of Northumberland, so it's more correctly pronounced with a long "i" as "Clive-ia".

Today's koala

We have a koala-favoured tree by our front gate which is frequented by this female.  But this is the first time she's been back since autumn.  We had koalas visit our previous garden.  Here are some pictures I took in 2007.  It's amazing how they manage to sleep and not fall and how they can ascend and eat at the top of trees.  They're also quite good leapers from branch to branch.   But mostly they just eat gum leaves and sleep (a lot)!

Agathis robusta, cones and leaves
Many years ago I chanced upon a fresh agathis (kauri pine) cone in a park.  When I split it there were a number of seeds inside some of which germinated.  This is a picture of one of the trees that resulted.  It was about 10 metres high at the time (summer 2008) and these were its first cones.  This photo was taken (with 10x zoom) from beneath the tree looking up into the outer canopy.

Georges Brassens - Les copains d'abord

Projet Brassens (English)
Georges Brassens (French)
Georges Brassens  (22 October 1921 - 29 October 1981) was a popular French singer/songwriter. Les Copains d'Abord is one of his most popular songs.  There's a very useful discussion and translation of the song at: The songs of Georges Brassens with English translation. This video is taken from a concert at Bobino in Paris, France, on 19 January 1972. Brassens is surprised when the orchestra joins in on the song towards the end.
